Senior Living

Understand care options and prepare better questions for providers, families, and caregivers.

Start with the person, not the brochure

Senior living decisions involve more than choosing a building. Consider the person’s daily routine, current support needs, mobility, social preferences, budget, and what may change over time. Include the older adult in the conversation whenever possible.

Understand the options

  • Support at home: services and home changes that can help someone remain in familiar surroundings.
  • Independent living: housing and amenities whose included services vary; do not assume hands-on care is provided.
  • Assisted living: a setting offering personal support, with services and care limits to confirm directly.
  • Memory support: a description that needs careful questions about staffing, security, training, routines, and services.
  • Nursing and rehabilitation care: ask about the specific care offered, admission requirements, coverage, and discharge planning.

Names alone do not establish the care someone will receive. Ask each provider to explain its actual services, limits, staffing arrangements, fees, and what happens if needs increase.

A local place to begin

The Bergen County Division of Senior Services / Aging and Disability Resource Connection offers information and assistance. Call (201) 336-7400 or the statewide ADRC number, 1-877-222-3737, to ask about current resources and eligibility.

For licensed facility information, start with the New Jersey Department of Health. Public reviews can help you form questions, but they are not a substitute for checking the relevant license, inspection information, care capabilities, and contract.

Questions worth taking to a visit

Ask what is included in the quoted price, which services cost extra, how staff communicate with families, how medication and emergencies are handled, what accessibility features are available, and how the provider responds to a change in care needs. Request written answers and take time to compare.
